Southern Cross

Southern Cross is proudly Australian. Since 1904, the company has been specialising in the design and manufacture of water solutions. Southern Cross has its own R&D and engineering department, full manufacturing plant, and test facility to ensure the quality of all the pumps they make.

Southern Cross boasts a wide range of industrial pumps that carry top-class Australian quality, reliable pumping operation, and high durability.

The iconic Southern Cross Starline, Sovereign, and ISO PRO pumps are high–efficiency, high–performance, high-quality end-suction pumps. The range includes close-coupled and direct-coupled pumps. Close-coupled pumps eliminate shaft couplings and ensure that the motor and pump are correctly aligned. This also reduces the pump’s footprint, saving valuable space and reducing the plinth size required.

Additionally, Southern Cross equipped its end-suction pumps with hydraulically and dynamically balanced impellers with double curvature, ensuring users can achieve optimum efficiency in their operations.

Principle of Operation

An End Suction Pump is a type of centrifugal pump where the suction is axial and the discharge is at 90 degrees to the suction. Apart from these design characteristics, end suction pumps work using the conventional centrifugal working principle of rotating an impeller to add velocity to the fluid and push it off the impeller vanes. The duty fluid then falls off to the volute and gains pressure enough for it to exit through the discharge.

Applications

  • Process Water
  • Reagents & Acid Transfer
  • Sea Water
  • Process Liquids
  • Hot & Cold Water Supply

Southern Cross designs and manufactures a range of standard and special inline vertical multistage pumps called the PVMI Series. These pumps offer great savings on floor space. But more than this, vertical multistage pumps provide high pressure and a wide range of flows. They are suitable for transferring low viscosity, non-inflammable and non-explosive fluids, and liquids that do not contain solids or fibres.

Multiple pumps can also be assembled and customised as a turnkey pumping solution or automatic pressure system called PVMIE System.

Principle of Operation

A vertical multistage pump is a centrifugal pump containing two or more impellers. The impellers may be mounted on the same shaft or on different shafts, but for most pumps, they are on the same vertically positioned shaft. The fluid flows into the inlet of the pump casing where it flows into the eye of the impeller. The rotation of the impeller creates centrifugal force which directs the fluid along the impeller vane and pushes the fluid to the outer tip of the impeller vane where it enters the stage diffuser. The diffuser is what leads the fluid into the suction eye of the next impeller. This process continues until the fluid has passed through each impeller stage. The fluid is then directed out the pump casing through a final diffuser and into the pump discharge.

The Southern Cross Centurion Series boasts extremely dependable horizontal split case pumps. The Centurion pumps have long been used in fluid handling duties where reliability and accessibility are paramount. These horizontal split case pumps feature a simple and convenient design for easy servicing, cleaning, and maintenance.

Highly durable with their 420 stainless steel shaft with 316 stainless steel shaft sleeves, the Southern Cross Centurion pumps are made to last.

Principle of Operation

Split case horizontal pumps are designed with casings that come apart. The design allows for the top part of the case to be removed without disturbing the driver or associated piping. This allows for quick and easy inspection and repair of the rotor as needed. Split case horizontal pumps are usually axially-split. That is, the flange where the case splits is in the plane as the pump axis. As for the operation, they follow the conventional centrifugal pump principle where fluid enters into the impeller eye and is cast out by centrifugal force along its circumference through the impeller’s vane tips. The action of the impeller increases the fluid’s velocity and pressure and directs it towards the pump outlet.

Borehole pumps are trusted and proven workhorses found in industrial environments around the world. These pumps are designed to handle challenging applications and are continuously improving operations in key global industries. The range of borehole pumps by Southern Cross is available in two series: Everflow 6-10” and SC 4-6”. They are equipped with a strainer at the inlet to protect the pump from large-sized solids that they cannot handle, therefore extending their life.

And with hydraulically and dynamically balanced impellers, the Southern Cross borehole pumps are strong solutions with reliable performance and high efficiency.

Principle of Operation

Borehole pumps are a type of submersible centrifugal pump of multistage design which can be submerged at large depths. They work by a motor driving a shaft which in turn drives either one or several impellers. The motor is located at the bottom of the pump, with the pump located above the motor. The pump intake is in the middle of the unit, with the discharge at the top contrary to all other pump designs.

The Southern Cross Everflow Series of high-efficiency turbine pumps is made to perform to the most demanding specifications found in a number of industries. Their heavy-duty construction incorporates diffuser vanes and rigid shaft support bearings. They are equipped with high-efficiency impellers that are statically and dynamically balanced for vibration-free operation. Discharge heads include flanged outlet connections, a water-lubricated shaft packing gland and a machined mounting flange for thrust assembly.

And with tandem bronze and neoprene rubber bearings, they achieve more accurate shaft support and higher abrasion resistance.

Principle of Operation

Vertical turbine pumps work when water enters the pump at the bottom through a bell-shaped part called the suction bell. From there it moves into the first stage impeller, which raises the water’s velocity. The water then enters the diffuser bowl immediately above the impeller, where this high velocity energy is converted into high pressure. The bowl also directs the fluid into the next impeller located immediately above the bowl, and this process continues through all the stages of the pump.

After the water leaves the last diffuser bowl, it passes through a long vertical column pipe as it rises the well bore toward the surface. The spinning shaft inside this column is supported at three- or five-foot intervals with sleeve bushings that are mounted inside the column and lubricated by the water moving past them. At the surface is the pump discharge head, which allows the flow to change direction, toward the discharge pipe.
